Chapter 16

“You say someone left this outside your door?”

Angela nodded, clutching her purse tighter with one arm, the only sign she was at all nervous about the mysterious note that had been left on her porch.

“Yes. It was probably close to nine o’clock, maybe a little later. I was sitting up talking to my niece when there was a knock at the door, and this was outside.”

“Hmm.” She could tell by the set of his eyebrows that the chief was not pleased with the development.

“Do you remember when this photo was taken?”

Angela nodded. She had been racking her brain on the way over, and had determined it must have been the second time she visited Patricia Miller, based on the clothes she was wearing.

Angela gave him the date and estimated time she believed the picture to have been taken, and when asked if she noticed anyone following her, she answered definitively in the negative.

“Do you think it’s a threat? Or a friendly warning?”

Chief Helbar scratched his head and placed the picture, now sealed in a plastic big, on his desk. “Honestly, couldn’t say for sure. One thing for sure is Patricia Miller couldn’t have delivered it—we’ve had a car outside her house ever since we sent her home.”

This was news to Angela, but she let the detail pass.

“If Randy was alive, it seems like the kind of thing he would send,” the chief continued, his brow furrowing at the thought. “Especially if he did steal that darn duck and it got him killed.”

“That’s what you think happened? You think he was killed in revenge for stealing the statue?”

The chief shrugged his shoulders as if to release a pent-up muscle and shook his head. “I’d like to say Randy wasn’t capable of it, but I’m having a hard time explaining how it could have gotten into his garage—especially without Trish knowing about it.”

Angela had to admit, until recently, she couldn’t have imagined anything of the like happening in her parents’ house without her mother finding out. Mothers had a way of finding out everything.

“I don’t like the idea of you going home by yourself after this,” the chief continued.

“I’m not going home,” Angela said quickly. “I’m on my way to work, actually. And besides, I’ve got Ruff with me.”

Ruff gave a single bark of affirmation.

I’ll take care of Angela, Chief.

Not fooled, the chief raised an eyebrow. “And after work?”

“I have to go home—someone has to feed the animals.”

“This is why I’ve always been a fish kind of guy,” the older man grumbled. “Is there at least anyone who can stay with you?”

Angela instantly thought of her dad, but her mom needed him more—besides, he wasn’t a spring chicken anymore and could get just as badly hurt if there was some sort of attack.

“I can call Michelle,” she said quickly, thinking she couldn’t remember the last time she’d seen her friend go anywhere without some method of self-defense, even if it was just pepper spray. “And besides, if it’s a friendly warning, it doesn’t mean I’m in danger necessarily.
